This past weekend we attended the @danceparadenyc

This past weekend we attended the @danceparadenyc and learned about *Tinku* — a powerful, ancestral Bolivian tradition that blends beauty, ritual, and movement. Rooted in the Quechua word for “encounter,” Tinku began in Potosí, Bolivia, where villages would gather to fight and spill blood as an offering to Pachamama, Mother Earth, in hopes of an abundant harvest. I asked what does shed blood mean? It literally means fight to death 😯

The outfits, colours and music were absolutely stunning. @tkssfilialny honored that history through dance — channeling strength, spirit, and deep cultural pride.

You’ll notice dancers with ropes called *Warakas*, once used in battle and hunting. Others embody the role of *Machu* — a wise, flirtatious figure adorned in vibrant sashes, thick sandals, a charango, and a montera crowned with an Ilama, symbolizing sacrifice and wisdom.

Through every step, turn, and shake of a pom pom, we experienced the beauty of our roots.
